The Riverside Players are a unique amateur theatre company. It was formed in 1951 by former students of the Central School of Speech and Drama in order to take a play touring in the summer holidays. The idea became an annual fixture, incorporating the friends and families of those originally involved, and expanding to the point at which moving about the country became impracticable.
The “tour”, as it is still known, has now become a fortnight’s stay in one place – over the years: Culham, Stamford, Bognor, Bloxham, Pangbourne, Chipping Norton and Windsor. We have also taken productions to Copenhagen.
In our two week ‘tour’ we build the scenery, make the costumes and props and rig the lighting ….oh! ….and we rehearse and perform the play, all from scratch.
The whole experience is exhilarating, stimulating, satisfying, exhausting and thoroughly enjoyable. The Riverside Players has grown because members have brought their families along and have introduced people who they feel would enjoy and contribute to the company. Many of us come back year after year and lifelong friendships have been formed.
